Aso-oke (pronounced ah-SHAW-oh-keh) is a Yoruba phrase meaning 'top cloth' or 'cloth from the top' — a name that speaks to its elevated status in Nigerian culture. Traditionally woven by Yoruba men on narrow horizontal looms, the fabric is made in long, narrow strips that are then sewn together to create wider pieces. The result is a distinctive, slightly raised texture that is instantly recognisable.

For centuries, Aso-oke has been the fabric of ceremony. It is worn at weddings, naming ceremonies, funerals, and festivals — occasions where community, identity, and heritage are on full display. The three most iconic Aso-oke weaves are:

• Ẹlẹ̀kọ̀ — a plain, tightly woven fabric, often in bold solid colours
• Sanyan — a neutral, earthy tone woven from wild silk, considered the most prestigious
• Alaari — a deep red or magenta weave, associated with royalty and celebration

The Craft Behind the Cloth

Traditional Aso-oke weaving is a skill passed down through generations. Weavers use narrow-strip looms, often working outdoors, producing strips just a few inches wide that are later joined by hand.
